Pr0ne: A Casting Couch Musical The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 7 2013

The real-life 2010 incident that appears to have inspired this problem-filled musical from the Underscore Ensemble is confusing enough. It reportedly went something like this: following a contract dispute with a well-known "casting couch" porn site, which purports to trick women into being filmed having sex, a young model exposed the premise as bogus, claiming she'd been paid for the shoot and knew she'd be making porn. But in this infinitely more complicated telling, an aspiring actress is duped at every turn, stripped of any agency, and run through the slut-shaming mill in a legal system that the musical takes huge pains to explain but appears to fundamentally misunderstand. Technical issues abound under director Alex Higgin-Houser, and the show's handful of sprightly numbers and resonant insights aren't nearly enough to justify its staggering run time. —Keith Griffith
