Predator: The Musical Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Aug. 20 2011

This cheeky, intelligent adaptation of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger action vehicle, Predator, has a lot going for it. David Krump, William Stobb, and Will Bulka's script picks up on the strong characters and lightning pacing that make the movie great while cleverly ribbing its thin plot and faulty logic. Cody Evans bulges impressively behind his AR-15 as the Schwarzenegger character, Dutch, spitting Austrian-accented one-liners through a cigar-corked jaw. But after intermission the show becomes a survival mission of its own—a slog through clumsy fight scenes and back-to-back musical numbers in a stiflingly hot theater. If there's a reason not to radio for an extraction, it's the climactic revelation of Glenese Hand's terrific creature effects. —Keith Griffith
