Pretty Penny The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through March 20 2010

You'd think it might be sexy. But playwright Randall Colburn isn't after sexy. Redolent of exercises in postmodern anomie like Patrick Marber's Closer, Colburn's story of a phone sex "provider" tries hard to make a point about the fungibility of identity in a tech-enabled, all-fantasy-all-the-time world. Too hard, really. Although it does an impressive job of piling on the ambiguities, the script finally comes across feeling less like drama than algebra--a cool if somewhat overworked equation. Nathan Robbel's production for the Right Brain Project goes a long way toward softening the schematics: he arranges the audience in a ring around the playing space so that actors are always practically near enough to touch. --Tony Adler
