Pretty, Smart, Poetic The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 2 2011

Brigham Mosley's new play about three sisters and their father is a fable with a pop-psych moral: Whatever's wrong with you, it's your parents' fault. Conveniently, the fairy-tale angle excuses cliches and magical plot twists, while the psychologizing keeps things from getting too faux-naif and unbelievable. Mosley's attempts at comedy fall flat, though, and his dramatization of the poet-protagonist's psyche not only makes her look completely wacko but eliminates any trace of subtext from the script. Still, Ashley-Marie Quijano's production for Odradek Theatre ranges inventively over the space. The set, props, and animations are versatile and evocative, and many in the cast resist the temptation to overact in their brittle, artificial roles. --Laura Molzahn
