Now a trio—Simeon and Tree have added a third MC, Race—local hip-hop vets the PRIMERIDIAN looked overseas for the beats on their latest and best album, Da Mornin’ Afta (All Natural). Every track was produced by a European—the most notable name is Nicolay of the Foreign Exchange, a Dutchman who’s since moved to North Carolina—but the collaborations all retain the warm, soulful, sample-based sound beloved by the Primeridian’s corner of the Chicago underground. Each song is a total product, not just a series of grandstanding MCs trying to outdo one another, and cameos from locals (Iomos Marad, Naledge from Kidz in the Hall) and guests (Imani from the Pharcyde) mesh comfortably with the melodic, laid-back vibe. This may not be the kind of stuff that’s topping the charts right now, but it sure sounds good. —Peter Margasak
