Private Parts

The broad campiness of this first feature by Paul Bartel (Eating Raoul, Death Race 2000) is crisscrossed by sophisticated Hitchcockian themes of voyeurism and guilt. A fleabag hotel in Hollywood is home to Aunt Martha (Lucille Benson) and her mysterious son George; they're both into candid photography, and when Martha's runaway niece (Ann Ruymen) arrives, they find a perfect model/victim. The film's blend of intellectualism and low schlock is heady and entertaining, though Bartel seems stronger with his carefully maintained visual motifs than with his performers (1973).
