Prom Night The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 14 2010

. . . or, Ubu Roi goes to the big dance. Physical theater ensemble Les Enfants Terribles join forces with Red Tape Theatre for this grotesque comedy about clowns who invade a high-school gym to simultaneously ape and wreck an all-American rite of passage. The selection of the prom queen and king turns into a forced mating dance and the punch is spiked through tubes yanked from the innards of one of the invaders. The action turns from cutesy-disturbing to disturbing-disturbing by the end of this 55-minute show. Keland Scher's direction mostly keeps the bits from becoming too tiresome, and Shaun Renfro's setting perfectly captures the tacky glitz of the event. But a lack of air-conditioning makes the venue start to feel too close for comfort. --Kerry Reid
