Proof Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through April 14 2013

"I'm on so many advisory boards, but I can't remember the last time I actually gave any advice," lamented the bearded-sounding man sitting behind me at a Court Theatre production of Proof. The audience there is always insufferable, but U. of C. alum David Auburn's award-winning 2000 drama, set in the Hyde Park home of a retired professor, turns that nattering self-absorption into a truly immersive experience. Death and mental illness are mere MacGuffins in a plot that actually hinges on establishing the authorship of a brilliant mathematical proof. Histrionics over that and other first-world problems are the closest Auburn gets to real stakes. Charles Newell directs a top-flight cast—I'd believe any one of them sitting in the row next to me. Of course, that's just the problem. —Keith Griffith
