Psycho Beach Party

95 minutes

A psycho killer in 1962 Malibu tries to wipe out the cast of characters as an unpopular girl scrambles to find a boy to teach her how to surf—the candidates include a make-out artist who falls in love and a guru who's easier to seduce than legend would have it. This multigenre parody (2000) is excruciatingly slow and unamusing; a go-go dancer in the opening and closing credits does as much in a few minutes to shake up our perspective on a bygone aesthetic as the entire narrative in between. Robert Lee King directed, and Charles Busch (who plays police detective Monica Stark) wrote the screenplay and the play it was based on; with Lauren Ambrose, Beth Broderick, Nicholas Brendon, Thomas Gibson, and Kimberley Davies.
