Pump Boys and Dinettes Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 2 2009

You couldn't ask for a higher-quality revival of the 1982 musical. All six performers sing, dance, and play various instruments with such verve and energy it hardly matters that the score--an homage to country and western and rockabilly--offers one knockoff after another of better-known tunes. And they commit so strongly to their characters that you almost don't notice that there's no story or character development to speak of--just a loving, highly idealized, very retro portrait of a rural, blue-collar America blissfully free of plant closings, economic hardship, and dysfunctional relationships. --Jack Helbig
