Pup, Ne-Hi, Team Spirit, Meat Wave Recommended 18+ Early Warnings (Music) Sold Out (Music) Soundboard Image

When: Fri., Jan. 16, 9 p.m. 2015

The songs on Pup’s self-titled full-length debut, out last year on Side One Dummy, aren’t anything new or exciting: punky indie-rock fare full of heavily distorted guitar, hooky melodies, and catchy leads, they’re not unlike the output of many other almost-mainstream rockers. (Wavves and Cloud Nothings come to mind.) What sets this Toronto-based band apart is the energy and spirit with which it plays them. In other hands the tunes would run the risk of being total snoozers, but Pup tears them apart piece by piece. Lead singer Stefan Babcock shreds his vocal cords as he reaches for each and every anthemic chorus, and drummer Zack Mykula relentlessly bombs his kit like a man with eight arms. The guys in Pup certainly aren’t reinventing the wheel, but it doesn’t look like they much care to. This show is part of the Tomorrow Never Knows festiva. —Luca Cimarusti
