Puppet animations by Lisa Barcy

Animator Lisa Barcy uses a wide range of techniques, including Claymation, silhouette animation, and puppetry. While she's clearly influenced by Jan Svankmajer and the Brothers Quay, she also has a fresh wit that's all her own. I particularly liked The Guilt Trip (2003, 15 min.), which uses puppets and giddy camera movements reminiscent of the Quays to tell a tale of sex, religion, and remorse. Mermaids (2004, 45 min.) explores a love triangle involving two marine biologists and a giant squid, but the sections employing Japanese Bunraku and live action (including an appearance by Barcy) curiously diminish the emotional force of the cutout animation. Still, this program is highly recommended for those whose interest in animation goes beyond Disney. 70 min.
