Puppy Tears Festival of Experimental Puppetry The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 19 2010

As hosts of this rotating showcase of new puppet works, the Rough House devoted 80 minutes of opening night to their sweet, sluggish, simplistic Ichthyodyssey--a puppet folk opera about a cowardly fish trying to woo the headstrong fish princess. With an edit and some irony the show might achieve the naive charm of Jason Adams's Flight, a toy theater piece that conflates the myths of Icarus and Amelia Earhart, or Julia Miller's The Ballad of Lulu del Ray, a dreamy shadow-puppet saga about an outer-space cowgirl. Both are beguiling. Meanwhile, Meredith Miller's The Sad Soliloquy of Bubbles the Dead Mermaid is underdeveloped and seemingly unrehearsed, not to mention puzzling: You've got to wonder what a ukulele solo is doing in an evening of puppet shows. --Justin Hayford
