Pussy on the House Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 30 2011

Ryan Landry's drag-filled 2004 parody of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof entertains on the same fill-in-the-blanks principle as Mad Libs--i.e., on returning to the family POLYESTER plantation, fading CHILDREN'S SHOW star Brick must face his demons and reconcile with dying parent Big MAMA. Matthew Gunnels directs a talented cast--a slinkier, more languorous Maggie than the one Jeremy Myers provides is scarcely imaginable--but the, uh, male parts suffer from inattention. It's almost as though the folks at Hell in a Handbag Productions only count it as acting if you're playing the opposite gender. Quick-witted and funny as it is at points, Landry's story ends up mired in his contradictory attempt to spoof the original while retaining its serious themes, an approach that wears thin by the second act. --Keith Griffith
