Putas Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 18 2012

Although billed as a solo performance, Liza Ann Acosta's autobiographical contribution to Teatro Luna's Solo Tres repertory features five actresses who spend the first 20 minutes of the piece invoking so many big ideas about memory, family, truth, and culture that it's hard to know what it might end up being about. But hey, this is a work in progress. Once Acosta focuses on her true subject—how the women in her family struggle (and often fail) to construct authentic sexual identities within the repressive imperatives of Latino machismo and superstition-soaked Catholicism—she strikes gold. Alexandra Meda's spirited, poised cast create nuanced, empathic portraits of women perpetually picking the lesser of numerous evils. With a clearer sense of progression, these carefully observed profiles could deliver a now-absent payoff. —Justin Hayford
