Nigerian-born choreographer and dancer Qudus Onikeku makes his U.S. debut with Spirit Child, a piece inspired by the main character in Nigerian author Ben Okri's Booker Prize-winning novel The Famished Road. Azaro is caught between life and death, earth and the spirit realm, as he witnesses the hardships his parents experience and the political unrest surrounding them. Onikeku spent the fall of 2018 as a practitioner-in-residence at the Dance Center. His work combines dance and acrobatics, with elements derived from Yoruba philosophy, hip-hop, capoeira, and tai chi. There will be postshow discussions after both performances.
