Quirky Best Friend Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays. Continues through July 24 2013

Picking up where most rom-coms leave off, this new play by Julie Pearson and Noah Appelbaum starts with a perfect couple getting engaged, then shifts focus to the bride-to-be's best friend, Kitty, a free-spirited kook in the Phoebe-from-Friends mold. The plot mostly involves Kitty getting over her philandering ex and realizing that the nebbish of her dreams has been right under her nose all along. Allison Talavera has her ditzy do-gooder routine down pat as Kitty, and a wry Maggie Gottlieb wrings some laughs from her role as the second fiddle's second fiddle. But both the aimless script and Jessica Kent's slapdash staging for Cor Res Theatre end up merely rehashing chick-flick cliches instead of overturning them. —Zac Thompson
