Rabbit Hole Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 15 2009

The premise of David Lindsay-Abaire's 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winning domestic drama wouldn't be out of place in a soapy Lifetime movie: a young Westchester couple grapples with the accidental death of their four-year-old son. But this NightBlue production is enlivened by performances that come across as deeply felt yet don't shy away from comic touches. Megan Schemmel, as the grieving young mother, and Cortney McKenna, as her obnoxious sister, are particularly strong. The dialogue is unnervingly authentic--Lindsay-Abaire is especially adept at capturing the kind of syntax that tumbles out when we try to process emotions and narrate them at the same time. But there's a studious, MFA-program quality to the play's construction that often left me feeling more manipulated than moved. --Leon Hilton
