Rack 'n' Roll!

Dear editor,

Everyone knows that a bicycle is often the best way to get around Chicago, especially if you're headed to a concert or festival. Unfortunately, as your article "Streets and San Stole My Bike!" [August 10] points out, finding a place to park your bike at some events can be difficult. The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation is urging the city to develop a clear policy on when bikes can be removed and how bikes that get removed will be returned to their owners. The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation is also working to improve bicycle parking at many area events. Every concert, festival, and event should have ample, secure, and convenient bicycle parking.

The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, with the Mayor's Office of Special Events, has been providing free valet bike parking at this summer's Outdoor Film Festival in Grant Park. Bike to the Outdoor Film Festival any Tuesday through August and we'll watch your bike for you. We even have mechanics on hand from Blackstone Bicycle Works who can adjust your brakes and tune up your shifting while you watch the film.

The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation and several local rental companies have portable bicycle racks available for use at special events. We are hoping to work with the Mayor's Office of Special Events in the future to make these racks easily available wherever they are needed.

The city of Chicago's "Bike 2000 Plan, A Plan to Make Chicago Bicycle Friendly" calls on the city to "promote publicized bicycle parking at all major special events and festivals." The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation is working hard to make sure bicyclists' needs are better served. For more information on event bicycle parking, contact the bike federation at 312-42-PEDAL, on the Web at www.biketraffic.org, or look for our Bike Valet at the Outdoor Film Festival.
