Radio

“His courage made them champions” brags the poster for this inspirational sports drama about James “Radio” Kennedy, a severely retarded young man in Anderson, South Carolina, who was adopted as a mascot by the athletic department of Hanna High School in the late 70s. Played with head-wagging commitment by Cuba Gooding Jr., Radio never really does anything courageous to inspire the football or basketball teams, and they treat him like a chimp in a sweater. Hovering around this outsize performance are Ed Harris as the kind coach who recruits Radio, Alfre Woodard as the worried school principal, and a sorely underused Debra Winger as the coach's wife; all three actors deserve a better story. Mike Tollin directed. PG, 109 min.
