Rain

A young girl vacationing with her bored parents and her charming little brother at the beach tries to negotiate the awkward in-betweenness of early adolescence in this 2000 feature debut by New Zealand director Christine Jeffs. The girl feels trapped by her father and mother, who drinks too much and begins making out with a photographer at parties, and she rejects a suitor her own age to pursue the photographer herself. The tragic denouement is a bit too calculated, but Alicia Fulford-Wierzbicki stands out as the protagonist, projecting a mix of self-doubt and almost animalistic willfulness. Jeffs wrote the screenplay, adapting a novel by Kirsty Gunn. 92 min. With Sarah Pierse, Alistair Browning, Aaron Murphy, and Marton Csokas.
