Rapture

When: Thursdays. Continues through July 31 2014

This late-night long-form improv show from ComedySportz periodically grinds to a halt as cast members break out into freestyle rapping. After getting off to an excruciatingly flow-impaired start on opening night, eight eager-to-please performers rallied to tell a funny, profane, and often tasteless tale involving a paternalistic drug dealer, a misogynistic toy salesman, and a transplanted country bumpkin in love with a deaf police officer. In the nonrhyming portions of the evening at least, more jokes landed than flopped (though a sour subplot making light of domestic abuse seemed ill-advised, to say the least), and the narrative cohered to a remarkable degree—always a plus in improv shows. The only real trouble is the rapping, which tends to stall the plot rather than advance it. —Zac Thompson
