Razor Blades

Dazzling visuals outweigh narrative structure in this elliptical 1994 tale of a suicidal recluse in communist-ruled Prague. Director Zdenek Tyc artlessly switches from color to black and white to indicate different time periods and mental states, and he uses overhead shots to create sweeping panoramas of the city (some of which, like the last shot, are actually meaningful). But the film casts a spell only when images linger and turn abstract; Tyc?s indictment of conformity and the symbolism of his hero trying to escape from Prague to the countryside are obvious to the point of being obtuse. With Filip Topol, frighteningly believable as a cipher.
