ReadyMade DayDreame Member Picks New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays. Continues through Aug. 16 2013

An ending to a play is supposed to be a definite thing, right, affording a sense of completion and resolution? But at the end of ReadyMade DayDreame, when the cast walked offstage and the house lights went up, the audience stayed in their seats, confused. Was it really over? It was hard to tell based on anything that had happened onstage. Ostensibly, the play is a pastiche of Alice in Wonderland and modernist art. It follows the absurdist travails of Fountain, one of Duchamp's readymades, a urinal elevated to the status of art by being in a gallery, which is tired of getting peed on and embarks on a quest to complain to the curator. The playwrights seem to have forgotten that nonsense and logic are not mutually exclusive. I have never seen such a tipsy audience laugh so little.—Aimee Levitt
