Real Magic with Justin Purcell The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays. Continues through May 20 2011

Justin Purcell's first full-length show won't resuscitate the magic-comedy genre--at least not until he gives it some structure and expands the range of his improvised quips beyond a self-deprecating aloofness. While going to great lengths to let us know that he doesn't care that much about his tricks, the young illusionist showcases sharp sleight of hand and some nebbishy stage appeal. His shaky nerves are apparent in trembling and a crackling, dry voice, but that frequently works to his advantage: tricks that are meant to look botched look genuinely botched. Purcell has the skills. Now he needs to refine his act into something less dependent on audience generosity. --Dan Jakes
