Legendary street photographer Robert Frank displays some of the restlessness of his landmark 1958 book, The Americans, in these ostensible documentaries, which movingly suggest the unknowability of their subjects. In Paper Route (2002) Frank accompanies a Nova Scotia newspaper deliveryman as he offers snippets about his customers but tells us little; it feels like he's riding in a bubble. Sanyu, a Chinese artist friend of Frank's who died mysteriously in 1966, is the focus of the highly personal Sanyu (1999), which gives the lie to the objectivity of the art documentary; voice-overs, handheld images of Sanyu's art, and images of, among other things, his former studio and zoo animals evoke the beginning of a search rather than a conclusion. 60 min.
