In a cute send-up of preadolescent stereotypes, the cartoon characters from the TV show Recess, created by Paul Germain and Joe Ansolabehere, go off to specialty summer camps, leaving their best friend behind. T.J. has nothing to do until he stumbles onto a fiendish plot—the local elementary school has been taken over by an arch-villain whose minions include nuclear scientists and ninjas. Of course no one believes this except T.J.'s friends, who return to help him save the world with their proficiency at pro-style wrestling, astronomy, military discipline, baseball, and opera singing. Flashbacks to the 60s, when an administrative decision at the school set the stage for the trouble, are also the explanation for a wholesome psychedelic final-credits sequence. Directed by Chuck Sheetz; written by Jonathan Greenberg; with the voices of Dabney Coleman, James Woods, and Robert Goulet. 84 min.
