Red Hook Justice

Meema Spadola's video skillfully chronicles an experimental program in Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood that attempts a holistic approach to minor offenders, offering community service as an alternative to jail and encouraging them to seek job training and employment. The program administrators seem to really care, though not everyone wants to be helped. Given that most of the offenders grew up disadvantaged—the father of two young men was murdered when they were kids—it's encouraging that Spadola finds several youths who got jobs and have started families. Since almost all the offenses involve drug possession, it's strange that the decriminalization option is never mentioned. 55 min.
