Redux The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Saturdays. Continues through May 9 2015

It's easy to sing the praises of this improvised evening of short, subtly interconnected scenes from Sirens, a septet of smart, seasoned female comics whose 16th year just got under way. On opening night the audience suggestion was "college degree," and the group's approach was patently extracurricular—a recurring cast of students, parents, and university faculty who we watch clumsily adapt to dorm life, empty nests, and interdepartmental strife. There's not much plot, but who cares, because Sirens have perfected something more interesting. Namely, a method for exploiting unintended moments of awkwardness: when a scene fails, it's replayed in a more persuasive context (hence the show's theme: redux). One bit of labored, practically incoherent dialogue was profitably and hilariously recast as an excerpt from an erotic novel being given a dramatic reading at a Barnes & Noble. —Jena Cutie
