Regular or Super: Views on Mies van der Rohe

57 minutes

Joseph Hillel and Patrick Demers begin their 2004 documentary on modernist master Mies van der Rohe with a little-known Montreal gas station he designed at the end of his life. We see this magnificent building from a variety of angles and in a variety of weather conditions, hear the comments of the local patrons, and see bicyclists ride past—architecture in its full context. This brilliant structuring device is accompanied by more ordinary fare, from talking heads to images of other Mies buildings, but they include illuminating comments and stories: Mies once spent two weeks in a hotel room apparently doing nothing, and his explanation was "I'm working."
