Relationships Gone Bad

Three short videos by Columbia College graduate students. The most interesting is 360, which depicts the close, often troubled bond between Alex, a paraplegic woman, and one of her caregivers, Harper. We see Harper inserting a catheter and selecting Alex's clothes; to get Alex from bed to a wheelchair the two must embrace tightly. Director Deborah Reed makes good use of static, passive compositions to emphasize Alex's immobility, but what's missing is an expressive use of rhythm (24 min.). Colin Magill Somers's Twisted Lies is a cryptic and creepy video on a love triangle and its resolution (9 min.); the love triangle in Benjamin Steger's Create Destroy concludes with a dramatic scene that leaves a woman trapped between two men (12 min.).
