Renoir le patron

Jean Renoir discusses his art with Jacques Rivette in an extraordinary documentary filmed for French television in 1967. It's by far the best film of its kind: the questions are intelligent and specific, the answers articulate and revealing, and the clips (from Renoir's masterpiece, The Rules of the Game) serve to illustrate concrete points. In one extended sequence, Renoir visits the chateau he used for Rules of the Game with Marcel Dalio, the actor who gave the film its most sublime performance; as they talk about the character they created together, you feel like a witness to one of the great moments in film history.
