Rent Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through April 12 2009

Anthony Rapp was 22 years old when he created the character of Mark Cohen--who's probably about 22--for the first staging of Rent in 1994. Now Rapp's 37, and it shows. Reprising Mark for this touring production, he looks just a touch too old to be celebrating la vie boheme in pre-gentrified lower Manhattan. But this isn't a Michael York-stars-in-one-too-many-Camelots sort of situation. Rapp is marvelous, as are his fellow Rent vets Adam Pascal and Gwen Stewart and the rest of an exceedingly likable cast. And director Michael Greif (also a veteran) gives vivid comic-tragic life to Jonathan Larson's musical, which continues to disclose its greatness as the years go by. More than a stunning entertainment, Rent has turned out to be a landmark artistic document of the AIDS epidemic, on a par with Angels in America. --Tony Adler
