Despondent over his bad grades, an eight-year-old boy from a privileged Tehran family plans to kill himself by jumping off a high-rise. On the rooftop he encounters an armed man recently released from prison who's intent on killing the business associate who sent him there and then himself. When the man suspends his mission of vengeance to return the boy to his family, the relationship between the unlikely companions flip-flops between camaraderie and distrust. Director Masoud Karamati, who began his career as an actor and director of children's films, brings a wry realism to an outlandish situation, and his lead actors, Mehdi Hashemi and Matin Azizpour, establish an endearing yet combustible chemistry that variously recalls Chaplin's The Kid and De Sica's The Bicycle Thief. In Farsi with subtitles (2002). 92 min.
