When: Fri., Dec. 26, 8 p.m. 2014

For more than a decade Atlanta has been at the forefront of the hip-hop scene in a way that no other American metropolis has been able to match—as soon as one city steals the spotlight for just a second, as Chicago did in 2012 with the meteoric rise of drill, Atlanta snatches it right back. Of the city’s most recent Auto-Tune mavericks and language-eviscerating experimentalists few have captured the attention of the masses like Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug, the latter having been unexpectedly crowned a hip-hop innovator in 2014—thanks in part to his oddball skill at melting words as they’re delivered, morphing vowels into unexpected, alluring shapes. Earlier this year the pair teamed up with New Orleans rap icon and Cash Money label head Birdman to form Rich Gang. Their debut mixtape, September’s Rich Gang: Tha Tour, Part 1, is a blur of growls, screeches, and Auto-Tuned sighs. The three strong personalities work together surprisingly well—check out the bonus cut “Who’s on Top,” which tips its hat to Chicago’s sugar-blasted bop sound. —Leor Galil
