Rich Hill | Chicago Reader

Rich Hill

91 minutes 2014

"We're not trash," declares Andrew, one of three poor, white Missouri boys profiled in this heartbreaking documentary. "We're good people." He's right, but in the tiny, decaying city of Rich Hill (population 1,396) the trash of modern American life piles up so high that anyone could be buried. Two of the boys are already smokers, one of them blows any cash he can scare up on Monster Energy drinks, and Andrew's father speaks longingly of saving up enough money to take his kids on a buying spree at Wal-Mart. "I never had any dreams," confesses one mother, who gave birth to her son when she was only a teenager, and the likelihood that he'll escape the cycle of poverty seems minute. In this life, people limit their dreams to what you can find at the dollar store. Andrew Droz Palermo and Tracy Droz Tragos directed.
