Richard III New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 21 2014

Some Shakespeare manages to survive in Empty Theatre's inaugural offering, but for the most part this dribbly, undramatic show feels like a tribute from a couple of English majors. Codirectors Casey Caldwell and Lee Huttner—both grad students—have left out the play's tension and gore (not a drop of blood makes its way onstage) in favor of muddied acting and a shapeless set. When he isn't trying to sound older, Richard Traub has moments of enjoyable creepiness as the title character, both in his seduction of Lady Anne and in a harrowing scene with Queen Elizabeth (Nicole Bruce). But by the time he gets to "My kingdom for a horse," we've had enough of this Richard more geeky than grim. —Chloe Riley
