A charter member in the exclusive club of successful crossover musicians, Grammy-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman combines an engaging personality and a marvelous command of technique. He's remarkably eclectic, performing jazz and classical music with the same conviction and verve, and he seems to appreciate the essence of any music, as shown in the serious, yet relaxed, interpretations of famous movie tunes on his latest CD, Visions (RCA Victor). His virtuosity and penchant for theatrics are the focus of his latest appearance at Orchestra Hall, a gimmicky affair teaming him with jazz bassist Eddie Gomez and keyboardist-bassoonist Bill Douglas. In what's dubbed a "visual concert," they'll perform bathed in different-colored lights against a backdrop of mood-evoking slides (courtesy of photographer John Pearson)--which, one hopes, won't distract too much from short pieces ranging from Debussy's "The Maid With Flaxen Hair" to Ornette Coleman's "'Ramblin'" to Steve Reich's richly nuanced "NY Counterpoint" to Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk."
