Right As Rain The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wed., March 17 and Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through April 24 2010

A vivid, honest performance by Ethan Itzkow overcomes the stilted dialogue, melodramatic excess, and clumsy structure of April Smallwood's three-act drama, now receiving its world premiere from InnateVolution Theater Productions. Set in a small southern town, Right as Rain features Itzkow as 17-year-old Luke, a preacher's son torn between his antigay religious training and his attraction to a hunky classmate (Pavel Tabutov). Toma Tavares Langston's bare-bones staging suffers from patchy pacing, amateurish supporting performances, and a lighting design that's almost nonexistent except for a laughable, strobe-lit dream sequence. But Itzkow is compelling as a shy kid wrestling with turbulent emotions. --Albert Williams
