Ring Around the Guillotine The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 23 2010

In this ostensible comedy by Chris Tawfik and Anthony Ellison, an old ring transports a pizza parlor waitress to a fairy tale version of medieval France, where some dying rosebushes have something to do with a sadistic dandy's plot to take over the country and do away with love and kindness forever. I think. The plot is so convoluted, the rules so inconsistent, and Ellison's staging so sloppy that it's never entirely clear what the devil is going on. A chuckle or two might've helped, but the wacky stuff feels slapdash while the darker aspects come off as dour and unpleasant, so none are forthcoming. Ring Around the Guillotine might've worked as brainless fun, but somebody forgot to add the fun. --Zac Thompson
