Now that the Lollapalooza and Pitchfork lineups are official, Gossip Wolf is ready to tackle another big summer blowout—Riot Fest! In 2013 the punk carnival takes over Humboldt Park from Fri 9/13 to Sun 9/15, and this furry Nostradamus has some predictions about the bill: emo-pop saviors Fall Out Boy, Greg Ginn and Ron Reyes's zombie version of Black Flag (not "Flag"—that's with Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski, and Bill Stevenson), goofball ska superheroes and TV "stars" the Aquabats, punk-rock thesaurus Bad Religion, Pennsylvania posthardcore brawlers Title Fight, and American idiots Green Day.
Grungy Chicago slop-pop duo the Funs mean to have a busy spring: on Tue 4/2 downstate label Manic Static released a proper vinyl edition of the band's ferocious self-titled debut LP, which came out digitally last year, and last week the band put out a good-lookin' video for album track "Reality." The Funs play a record-release show with Warm Soda and the Sueves on Sat 4/6 at northwest-side venue Space Club HQ, where they'll also be selling a limited two-song tour cassingle.
Gossip Wolf just got a whiff of new music from Chicago instrumental doom merchants Bongripper; the group recently released a slow burner called "Zero Talent" online, and London label Holy Roar will put it out on a split with UK heavy hitters Conan later this month. Bongripper guitarist Nick Dellacroce says the band cut the track in early 2012 (with another called "Fisting," which appears on a recent split with locals Hate), recording the drums in a Methodist church in Kankakee County! The Bongripper dudes are also halfway through writing a new full-length, which they hope to have out by the end of the year. This month they're touring the UK with Conan and opening for Floor at Subterranean on Mon 4/8 (see Soundboard).
