Rite of Spring | Chicago Reader

Rite of Spring

This 1963 feature marks a turning point in the career of the great Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira (I'm Going Home). The project began as a neorealist documentary, in the line of Oliveira's Bread and Douro, Working River, on the passion play performed by the peasants of a small Portuguese village. But midway through the filming, Oliveira found his point of view shifting from a sociological detachment to an immediate involvement with the fiction under performance, a shift that would produce the remarkable combination of theatrical ritual and documentarylike distance of his late features. In Portuguese with subtitles. 94 min.
