River North Chicago Dance Company The Short List (Theater) Recommended Critics' Picks Brief Run (Theater)

When: Sat., Nov. 13 2010

In the unstable universe of Risoluta, a new piece for five men and four women by New York-based choreographer Sidra Bell, duets are the norm. But partners are in constant flux, and there's always at least one odd man out. The lone wolves stalk the periphery, eyeing their rivals. With its taut limbs, alert torsos, and icy stares, Risoluta is a kind of feral mixer. A cool, moody score of sax solos and techno beats by jazz musician Dennis Bell (the choreographer's father) helps prevent overheating. Also on this 21st-anniversary program are Robert Battle's muscular male trio Three and Lauri Stallings's whimsical Suppose, both of which RNCDC premiered in February. Artistic director Frank Chaves contributes Forbidden Boundaries (2009) and Fixe (1994); Kevin Iega Jeff's Sky (2006) completes the bill. --Laura Molzahn
