This storefront from Wisconsin-based River Valley Ranch and Kitchens features tons of locally made products—including, of course, River Valley's own extended line of fungal sauces, dips, chutneys, spreads, and pastas, familiar from their presence at local farmers' markets. But in addition to the retail component, the former City Provisions space has been outfitted with a bakery operation, a deli counter, and a cafe. There are mushrooms in a bagel and mushrooms in a baguette. There's a portobello "Italian beef," a mushroom veggie burger, a mushroom omelet, a portobello and Swiss cheese brat, a burger with mushroom gravy, and what may be in the running for snack of the year—a beer-battered, deep-fried five-mushroom medley. There's even an item that shows the folks at River Valley know Chicago better than most: a mushroom version of the south-side’s iconic mother-in-law sandwich. Here it's two deep-fried house-made tamales set upon two slices of the house mushroom baguette and topped with portobello chili, onions, and a five-cheese garlic spread, and while the whole is less than its parts, the offering alone sets River Valley apart from your average carpetbagging cheeseheads.
