During an interview last winter, Rob Mazurek told me, “I have a problem. I love melody.” He delivered it like a confession, but the grin on his face said it was no problem at all. Though Mazurek’s music often pursues extremes of volume, density, and intensity, he never completely forsakes melody, and it takes a forward position in the music he composes for his Pulsar Quartet. Pianist Angelica Sanchez and electric bassist Matt Lux are as likely to contribute exquisite countermelodies as they are to join drummer John Herndon in generating tidal surges of sound and rhythm. Another thing Mazurek discussed in that interview was his use of grand concepts to push musicians and listeners alike toward an awareness of cosmic infinity. His theme for these concerts, during which the ensemble will develop the music for their next record, is the phrase “Rainbows Ablaze Like Unicorns on Fire.” Whether that will turn into an album title or a song title (or just guide the process as a provocative notion) remains to be seen. —Bill Meyer
