Regular readers of this paper already know that as far as I’m concerned there’s no regular gig in Chicago more fun, adventurous, and surprising than the Monday-night residency Robbie Fulks has been holding down at the Hideout since early 2010. The master singer-songwriter uses these shows to experiment and to salute his favorite musicians, sometimes at the same time—as he’ll do this week. Fulks plans to play the songs of country pioneers the Carter Family with the help of three of Chicago’s most adaptable jazz musicians: bassist Kent Kessler, drummer Frank Rosaly, and vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz. I have no idea what they’ll come up with—and neither does Fulks, judging by his response to an e-mail I sent him—but this residency is always worth checking out. —Peter Margasak
