Robert Covington

Robert Covington is known as an energetic drummer with a panache that allows him to excel in a remarkable variety of styles--from the traditionalism of Sunnyland Slim to the driving aggression of Youn Turks like Mark Hannon. Covington has managed to incorporate those diverse influences and more into a percussion style that's busy without being cluttered and versatile but not dilettantish. But it's his voice that's recently propelled him toward the front ranks: his rich baritone has a resonant vibrato, and he's got a playfulness that allows him to get away with sexy material that might sound unseemly coming from someone else. Covington always sounds as if he's having the time of his life, even when he's singing about hard luck, but he shines most on ballads: he can bring substance to even the most trite material, and on meatier fare the romantic atmosphere he creates is irresistible. Monday through Wednesday, Kingston Mines,, 2548 N. Halsted; 477-4646.
