Robin Verheyen NY Quartet 18+ Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Thu., Sept. 18, 9:30 p.m. 2014

Belgian reedist Robin Verheyen has been based in New York since 2007, but he’s stayed so busy in Europe that he’s still a relative unknown in the States. That’s a shame, because he’s a terrific instrumentalist and composer, writing twisty themes that sometimes swing and sometimes hurtle along steeplechase style. In his Chicago debut, he leads the New York-based group that appears on his 2012 album Trinity (52 Creations), an outfit that’s played more in Europe than in its own backyard. Verheyen has an easy rapport with trumpeter Russ Johnson (based in Milwaukee these days, he turns up frequently in town), and together they snake through the nimble, sketchy grooves of bassist Drew Gress and drummer Jeff Davis. The quartet will play new original material that’s due to be recorded in New York next week. —Peter Margasak
