Robots | Chicago Reader

Rated PG 2005

While Chris Wedge (Ice Age) may be the credited director, the true auteur of this busy, clanky computer-animated feature is producer William Joyce, creator of the popular Rolie Polie Olie children's books and TV show. Rodney Copperbottom is the young robot hero, an inventor who travels to the teeming megalopolis Robot City hoping to get a job at Bigweld Industries; his dream is derailed when he becomes enmeshed in a plot by the evil Ratchet, who intends to take over the company at the expense of the benevolent owner. Wedge and Joyce create a funky, retrofuturistic universe filled with robots and a dizzying array of gizmos, the net effect of which is like a prolonged visit to an amusement park—kids will love it. Featuring the voices of Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Mel Brooks, and Greg Kinnear. PG, 90 min.
