Rodgers & Hart: A Celebration | Light Opera Works Second Stage | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

Rodgers & Hart: A Celebration The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 6 2011

Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart were the most prolific and successful songwriting team of their day, producing 550 tunes between 1919 and 1943. Rodgers's smart, graceful melodies and Hart's cleverly rhymed lyrics fused to create an oeuvre that's long since outlived the often forgettable shows and movies for which the material was penned. These great songs also survive Light Opera Works's bland revue, with its cliched staging by Rudy Hogenmiller and mediocre musical direction by Linda Slein. Though the six singers onstage possess fine voices, they convey little of the emotional complexity that marks Hart's sometimes mischievous, sometimes melancholy verses. --Albert Williams
